What is the Keto Diet?

While on your weight loss journey, you may have heard about the Keto Diet. Does it work or is it just some fad diet? At Your Lean Life, we encourage a healthier approach to Keto, so our clients can lose weight while also getting the nutrients their bodies need to function. Here’s what you need to know about Keto:

What is Ketosis?

The body relies on carbohydrates, fats, and proteins for energy. When the body does not have enough carbohydrates to burn for energy, it must burn fats for fuel. This process is referred to as Ketosis. This is why the Keto diet is often associated with weight loss. However, there are healthier, more sustainable approaches to the Keto diet.

Mainstream Keto vs. Nutritional Keto

In the last few years, the Keto diet has become increasingly popular for people trying to lose weight. Those following this regimen restrict their carbohydrate intake in order to enter ketosis. This is known as Mainstream Keto.

Mainstream Keto was not originally intended for weight loss. This practice originally emerged in the 1920’s, as a therapy for epilepsy. Keto for epilepsy was later abandoned for other therapies and medications. Years later, Keto’s association with weight loss can be attributed to a misunderstanding of the science behind ketosis.

Nutritional Keto is known as the healthier alternative to Mainstream Keto. Instead of restricting, this approach simply substitutes starchy carbs for nutrient rich, low-carb vegetables. Nutritional Keto keeps the carbs low, while retaining and gaining muscle mass through protein. Meanwhile, fat intake will depend on your goals.

At Your Lean Life, we believe there are healthier, more sustainable approaches to weight loss than restricting. We teach our clients how to create meal plans that are composed of low-carb vegetables and whole foods. Tired of feeling deprived and never seeing results?
