The Difference in Natural and Refined Sugars

When you’re trying to lose weight, you’re likely to monitor your sugar intake very closely. While sugar can be one of the primary culprits in weight gain, there’s no shame in having a sweet tooth. It all depends on how much sugar you consume, and which kind of sugar that would be. The two sugars to consider are natural sugar and refined sugar, both of which can be common in everyday foods. Learn the difference between the two and how the consumption of either can impact your body.

Natural Sugar

Natural sugar can be found in honey, fruit, vegetables, and milk. Types of natural sugars can include glucose, fructose, and lactose. All foods with carbohydrates contain glucose, which happens to be the body’s main source of energy. You will find that fructose can be found in both fruits and vegetables, but is mainly found in fruit. Lactose is found in dairy products such as milk and cheese. Natural sugar is digested a lot slower than added sugar, stabilizing your metabolism over time. This will help sustain your energy and will keep your glucose level elevated for longer periods of time. 

Refined Sugar

Refined sugar is what is commonly referred to as “added sugar”. Added sugars are carbohydrates that are added to food or drinks during processing. Added sugars are commonly found in sodas, juices, salad dressings, sauces, bread, and cereal. Since sugar is used by the body as a quick source of energy, added sugar is processed rapidly. While the sugar will be used for energy, it can also be sent directly to fat storage if that energy goes unused. Consuming added sugar and not burning the energy after can cause your glucose levels to drop, resulting in a sugar crash. As a result of a crash, you may begin to feel irritable, sluggish, and in need of a boost. Repeating this cycle can lead to weight gain due to the lack of energy and desire to replenish with unhealthy food choices.
